The layout of our house

See the bold, bright home design of a Highland Park social club founder

This 1930s home in the French streets of Highland Park was updated and redesigned with personal flair. The home is owned by Deborah Scott, co-founder of the Park House, the exclusive social club in Highland Park Village. The home is within walking distance of the luxury shopping center.

The home at 4412 Belclaire Ave. was originally built in 1934 but renovated during Scott’s ownership. She said that the renovation was inspired by older homes with a modern feel on the inside.

“We were living in London at the time and had seen many renovations there of old homes that were very open and modern, almost loft-like in an old shell,” Scott said in an email. “That was our goal, to create an open plan, perfect for entertaining.”

The main house has five bedrooms, five bathrooms and one half-bathroom in its 6,543 square feet. The guest house adds additional square footage and has a kitchen area, a bathroom and a bedroom.

Scott said that art played a role in the renovation, along with a desire to incorporate color and offer flexibility.

“We designed this home to be a fun place to hang out for ourselves, family and friends,” she said.

White walls and wood flooring in the foyer, living room and dining room make visual space for the art. A living room and dining room sit at the front of the home, near the foyer. Scott called one of the front rooms an “art room,” and it is where a piece called “The Whisper Raum” was placed. On the opposite side of the foyer and through the dining room, another living space has colorful wallpaper and a sleek, orange bar. Scott said this is her favorite room in the house and that she plans to have an orange bar in their new house.

The bar room is open to the main living space or family room, which is accessible from the room with the bar, the dining room, the kitchen and another living space. Doors in the family room provide access to the backyard. Outside, the home has a pool and patio areas. There’s also a covered patio space with a fireplace.

All five of the bedrooms in the main house are located on the second floor. The primary suite has a striking, all-black bathroom (there’s a black bathtub) with metallic accents and a large, walk-in closet. Scott said the black bathroom was inspired by the Eagle Island Lodge in Botswana, where she and her family visited for a safari trip around the time of the home’s renovations. Bathrooms in the luxury tent suites had recently been renovated and were decorated in black with gold accents, she said.

The home is on the market for $6,995,000, listed by Damon Williamson with Compass.
