Budget and Timeline

Start with the two most important factors of any remodeling project – budget and timeline. You’ll need to determine whether you want to pay with cash or credit card, or apply for loans like a home equity loan, home equity line of credit (HELOC) or cash-out refinancing. You don’t have to decide early on, as your remodeler may offer other financing options.

You’re not expected to have specific dates on your timeline, especially if this is your first time having your kitchen remodeled. However, you should at least have an idea of when you want the project to begin. If you’re preparing for a specific event like a holiday gathering or a birthday celebration, then you need to put this in your checklist and make sure to discuss this with your remodeler.

Your Wants and Needs

Write a wish list of the things you want in your dream kitchen, without considering cost. Think about the countertop materials, cabinetry, flooring and the appliances that you’ve always wanted – perhaps, a bigger kitchen island? Once you have your wish list, group them into “needs” and “wants”. Your “need” list should include essentials like storage and work areas while the rest should be your “want” list.
